Norwich church's bid to fund 300 drinking wells

Water4WaterWell2010: A campaign to provide 300 drinking wells in Cambodia has been launched by a Norwich church and it is appealing for other congregations to join them.

The Water 4 Water campaign has been launched at Proclaimers Church in Norwich to coincide with World Water Day on March 22. The aim is to provide funding to plant 300 wells through local churches in Cambodia, Laos and Kenya.  This is part of a world-wide initiative to help over 100,000 people gain access to clean safe drinking water.

It is being led by John Lee, the missions team leader at Proclaimers, who visited the Cambodian projects and saw first hand the impact clean water can have in a community.

“The provision of clean water saw a dramatic reduction in cases of people being poisoned and contracting diseases such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid and diarrhoea,” said John.  “1 in 6 people do not have access to clean safe drinking water. Which is 1 billion people.

“This is a great opportunity for local churches to come together and make a practical difference.”

Water4WaterJohnLeeHow the campaign works:
  • Churches sign up to host social events which are attended by church members, work colleagues and people in their community.
  • At the event, attendees will be shown a promotional DVD and encouraged to donate to receive a bottle of water.
  • Each bottle of water represents 6 people receiving clean water for the rest of their life.
  • There is a minimum donation of £20 for each bottle.
  • Events to be held around World Water Day on March 22.
  • Information packs, marketing materials and the water will all be provided by Proclaimers.
The social event can be run on whatever scale a church feels comfortable with. This will generate additional funding, so missions budgets will not be stretched and because all the materials are provided, it should not take up too much of the churches’ time.

Proclaimers executive pastor Owen Morgan said: “Last year Proclaimers partnered with Metamorphic International, which is the team behind the global campaign and saw 30 wells being planted in Cambodia.  Our thought is that if we achieved this on our own, what greater things could a group of local churches uniting together do?

“We’re really keen to see churches in Norwich get involved with this incredible project. We love the combination of simplicity for us with such a profound impact in developing nations!”
