NCFL masthead 2023

Club focus: Sheringham Baptist FC

2012: Jess Tyson interviews Paul Smith, club secretary and team manager at Sheringham Baptist FC

When did your club first enter the league and what age divisions do you play in?

This is our third season; we joined in the 2009/10 season. We started with only a handful of boys and wondered if we would have enough to start the season but in faith we entered a team at u10 level. We have now grown to a club with over sixty players across five teams, u10, u12, 2 x u14 and u16 now with a home venue at Sheringham High School.

What church is your club connected to? How has that benefitted you?
We are sponsored by Sheringham Baptist Church and the majority of our helpers are from Sheringham churches. This has been a great community outreach for us and all the players are invited to all church youth events. After school clubs, youth clubs, freedom in Christ events, café church, residential weekends, fun days. This has been great for us as a church to spread the gospel within our community.

Why did you choose to play in the NCFL? What difference does it make?
We chose to play in the Norfolk Christian Football League as we were set us as a church team with Christian helpers. We wanted our teams and helpers to have a Christian ethos and to play football fairly and in the right spirit.

Who is your sporting hero and why?
My sporting hero is Bjorn Borg. As a tennis player and tennis coach as well as a football manager I have great respect for Bjorn in the way that he conducted himself during matches, his concentration, he didn’t query line calls or argue with umpires, he is a true gentleman.

In our newsletters we like to catch up with a different NCFL team or club to find out a little bit more about them. If you would like to be included please email Jess Tyson on secretary@norfolkcfl.co.uk
