Idea of Norwich mature Christian singles group

The idea of starting a Christian Singles Group in Norwich for those in their 40s and 50s has been floated. Elaine Rowe shares her experience and thoughts.

ElaineRowe420A bit about me…

I am in my mid 50s and divorced after a long marriage with grown-up children who live away. I used to be a stay at home wife and mum and I certainly never expected to find myself divorced.

Now I am content with life but I am also aware that I can be too content with my own company and only see people at work or church on a Sunday.

I go to St Luke’s on Aylsham Road of a Sunday morning where I sing in the music group but I also go to Wroxham Road Methodist in the evening

The vision…

When we are married, it’s easy to become insular so then, if we find ourselves alone, we are already isolated. If we have always been single, the group of friends we used to meet with may gradually have become just a few as people settle down and the focus of their lives changes.

Most churches are too small to cater for us other than through the regular meetings. If we go to a large church then there might be quite a lot of people we can meet with, however, if we go to the typical church there might only be a few people in a similar situation.

So far as I am aware Christian Singles and in particular mature single Christians are not catered for. There are groups for mums and tots, luncheon groups for pensioners, men’s prayer breakfasts, young wives, etc.

The attitude in some churches is that providing a group for us would single us out, yet in some ways we are singled out precisely because we are not being catered for.

The vision is for a mature Christian Singles Group which provides a comfortable atmosphere for meeting, activities and the emphasis on friendship and where being single is normal.

This could take the form of regular informal meetings at the Forum, cinema visits, meals out, walks, museum visits, etc The aim would be to keep costs down by making the most of free or cheap activities for those of us on a limited budget.

Wouldn’t it be good to have a group of people that it’s easy to meet with regularly or that could be contacted on the spur of the moment when you fancied going out to the pictures.

Regular meetings would be city centre based at the Forum where people could enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine.

The intention is not for the group to provide spiritual content as that should be given at the churches members attend through Sunday worship, small groups, etc. Neither would the group be linked to any particular church or denomination.
