North Walsham vicar aims to get WW1 flags flying again

2018: Faded flags that flew over wartime hospitals in North Walsham are set to be recreated thanks to the generous donation by a friend of the current care complex that occupies the site.

The faded grey flags, which were once red and white, have been stored at St Nicholas church, pictured above, and the vicar, Rev Paul Cubitt, together with Keith Jarvis from Friends of North Walsham War Memorial Hospital are aiming to get replicas created. These will go in the war memorial chapel which honours 99 men who served their country but did not return home, and in the hospital itself.

The First World War flags originally flew over two temporary WW1 hospitals where the Red Cross nursed injured troops. These have long since been demolished but stood where Greenway Close is now.

The recreation of the flags has been made possible by a donation from a well-known local shopkeeper and musician Denis Payne, who had connections to both the church and the hospital, and who died in November 2016.

To donate, email chairman Keith Jarvis at k.jarvis155@btinternet.com, or call 07788 889853.

The church is also fundraising to restore its main east window over the high altar which is also a Great War memorial. To help with the church window appeal contact the vicar on revpcubitt@btinternet.com.
