Inflatable bull at Gorleston church youth club

2018: A football cage and a giant inflatable bull have been two of the main attractions at a brand-new youth group held at a Gorleston church.

Pews were cleared out of the way on Friday June 15 as St Mary Magdalene Church on Magdalen Square in Gorleston launched its new youth club, Mags, with the main attraction being a football cage in the nave. In a quick-paced game, pairs of youngsters took it in turns to compete with one another in the cage as others gathered around the outside to cheer them on.

The youth group also featured the regular activities of table football, table tennis, snooker and a chill-out zone with Wi-Fi access. In addition, there was a well-stocked tuck shop which offered, drinks and pick-and-mix sweets, as well as pizza slices and cakes.

Rev Matthew Price, minister of St Mary Magdalene Church, explained, “We were delighted to welcome 28 young people to the launch of Mags, with 43 young people attending the second meeting. These were the first two of three special launch events, and we were grateful to the Sports Factory team from St Thomas’ church in Norwich for bringing their football cage for the fun!

Mr Price continued, “Our reason for launching the club is to respond to a need in the community as there is no youth club on the estate for children who are older than 11. We also want to reach out to families from the church, since our congregation is currently in the older demographic, so it is a strategic priority to develop links with families.

Yarmouth Mags games 640AT“The three meetings this summer were ‘launch events’ aimed particularly at current years 5 and 6 (harnessing the good links we have with the two local primary schools).  The end game is to run a fortnightly club for year 6 and above from September, recognising that the best advice to build youth work seems to be to start with the younger end of the age group and try to follow the cohort through.”

The last of the three launch evenings will be at 6pm this Friday, July 20, when the young people will get the opportunity to climb a “Vertical Twister Climbing Wall”.
