Gorleston church moves into theatre for carol service

2018: Cliff Park Community Church is heading off to the theatre this Sunday (December 2) when it takes over Gorleston Pavilion at 10.30am for the Carols and Coffee service which, for the first time, will be led by a full youth orchestra and choir.

The annual event will feature popular carols and other seasonal musical items as well as a short talk from church minister the Rev Mike Simm. Carols will be sung, and mince pies served in the relaxed cabaret style setting of the Edwardian theatre.

gorleston youth choir 750ATChurch member and well-known local musician John Stephens will be directing his Orchestrate! Youth Project orchestra, pictured above, and Norwich Young Voices choir, right, who earlier in November both played a leading part at the Festival of Remembrance at the Hippodrome.

‘The service always attracts a full house, but this year there will be the added challenge of getting a full size orchestra and youth choir on the stage’ said former broadcaster Tony Mallion who will host the event.

The Pavilion service launches Cliff Park’s Christmas activities which will include traditional Carols by Candlelight on December 9 at 4pm, Carols on the Green (at the Mews, weather permitting) the following Sunday at 5pm with mulled wine and mince pies, and the annual Christingle Family Service on Christmas Eve at 4pm which last year attracted over 100 people.

The church, set up by St.Andrew’s Parish and Gorleston Baptist Church almost 20 years ago, normally meets at Cliff Park Junior School.

The carol service in Gorleston Pavilion is free with no tickets required, but early arrival is recommended for the 10.30am start. There will be a retiring collection for the Food Bank.
